Cubs: Joe Maddon’s Opening Day 25-Man Roster

MESA, AZ – The Chicago Cubs will wrap up their 2017 Spring Training camp this week, departing their Mesa, Arizona home away from home this evening, and head to Houston for a pair of exhibition games with the Houston Astros, before heading to St. Louis to begin their 2016 World Series title defense.

The defending World Series Champions have now finalized the group of guys that they will kick-off that title defense with come Sunday evening in St. Louis when the Cubs visit former teammate Dexter Fowler and his new club, the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Here’s the crew that Cubs Manager Joe Maddon has tabbed to make that trip to St. Louis with, as the Chicago Cubs begin their first World Series Championship title defense in over a century.

Positional Players

Catchers: Willson Contreras, Miguel Montero

Infielders: Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Javier Baez, Anthony Rizzo, Ben Zobrist, Tommy La Stella

Outfielders: Albert Almora, Jason Heyward, Jon Jay, Kyle Schwarber, Matt Szczur

Pitching Staff

Starting Rotation: Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta, John Lackey, Brett Anderson, Kyle Hendricks

Bullpen: Koji Uehara, Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, Mike Montgomery, Justin Grimm, Carl Edwards Jr., Wade Davis

The Cubs ultimately decided to go with both Tommy La Stella, and Matt Szczur on the bench, breaking camp without Ian Happ, who tore up the Cactus League this spring and truly opened the eyes of the Cubs player development staff, as well as Manager Joe Maddon. It’s only a matter of time before Happ forces his way onto the major-league roster, or into a trade at this rate.
