On Saturday the Cubs promoted one of their top prospects, Ian Happ, to the major-league roster. Happ will join the team today in St. Louis, where he will be starting in right field and batting second.
He will be the first Cub to start and hit second in the batting order in his MLB debut since Javier Báez in 2014.
Happ is considered to be the Cubs’ second-best prospect, and is ranked as the 23rd best prospect in the league by MLB Pipeline.
The call-up came in response to a slew of injuries to different Cubs in recent days, including Kris Bryant (illness), Addison Russell (shoulder), Ben Zobrist (back), and Jon Jay (back).
Happ has been raking since an impressive performance in the 2016 Arizona Fall League, and is slashing .298/.362/.615 with nine homers so far this year at Triple-A Iowa.
In a corresponding move, relief pitcher Felix Peña has been optioned back down to Triple-A.
