CHICAGO — The DePaul Blue Demons are back in action tonight against the Delaware State Hornets after dropping their season opener to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons gave the Fighting Irish more of a challenge than they originally expected in the first half of Saturday’s game before Mike Brey and his veteran squad eventually took control of the game in the second half.
There were some positive takeaways from the loss on Saturday though; Chicago native Devin Gage looked solid leading the offense and looks like a definite spark plug for the team moving forward. Gage scored the first basket in the new building for the Blue Demons with a running jumper with 17:15 on the clock in the opening half.
Max Strus looked plenty aggressive in his DePaul debut on Saturday but struggled to get many shots to fall as he finished the game with 11 points on 3 of 13 shooting from the field in 36 minutes of action. The former Lewis University Division II All-American will be a force in the scoring department this season once he settles in.
Delaware State enters tonight’s contest 1-0 after a 71-50 season opening victory over Cairn on Friday evening. Cairn is a NCAA Division III program located in Langhorne, Pennsylvania for those wondering about the competition level in Delaware State’s last victory. The Hornets were led by Simon Okolue who recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds in the victory over Cairn.
The meeting between Delaware State and DePaul this evening will be the first meeting between the two programs, and Marin Maric will be searching for career point number 1,000 in his collegiate career this evening. Maric is just eight points away from reaching the plateau entering play tonight.
You can catch the action on FS2 (TV) and WSCR 670 The Score (Radio), tip-off is set for 7:00 PM (CT) from Wintrust Arena tonight.
