Ryan Pace has stolen the show this free agency, and he earlier today he picked up a second great wide receiver in Taylor Gabriel. Gabriel may seem like a small signing for Chicago (no pun intended,) but he is an underrated player that Bears fans should get excited about.
Gabriel didn’t have a great season for the Falcons, as he had 33 catches for 378 yards and just one touchdown. 2016 is where he earned this deal, as he had 35 catches for 579 yards and 6 receiving touchdowns. Why did his stats fall? I believe the whole Falcons team came back down to Earth, but I still think that Gabriel has plenty to give us.
In fact, Gabriel is a perfect fit for the Matt Nagy system. With all the short and quick plays that the system will have, he will be able to flourish when he is in open space. Chicago will most likely place him in the slot, where we can put him on some quick screens and other short routes, allowing him to run around linebackers or force the other team to put an extra cornerback on him. He will be playing a Tyreek Hill-type role for Chicago, so Gabriel will also be used as a deep threat when trying to spread the field.
After a slew of great deals that Ryan Pace made today, he adds another to the list with this move. I expect Gabriel to have found a home in Chicago, and I think Bears fans should be very excited about this signing.
