Bears Land Khalil Mack in Blockbuster Deal with Oakland

The Chicago Bears have traded for superstar Kahlil Mack.

General manager Ryan Pace has silenced his doubters, for one day at least.

Early Saturday morning, it was reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that the Bears were expected to trade for superstar Khalil Mack.

According to Rapoport, this was a deal that was being finalized late last night. Other teams involved included the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets. After Aaron Donald signed his massive contract on Friday, it was expected that the Oakland Raiders were going to have to make a decision on Mack soon.

Not only is a deal in place, but the Bears are also working on an extension for Mack, which will give him a deal worth more than the one Donald received.

The starting point to acquire Mack was two first-round picks. The Bears are sending that to the Raiders along with more according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

This was a huge deal made by Pace and the Chicago Bears. Again, the Packers were a team that was serious about trading for Mack. To not only block that, and get a superstar is huge for a team that was paper thin at the edge rusher position before this deal.

Call me crazy, but this is deal feels like a win-win for both teams. Two first rounders is a lot for any team to get in a trade, while the Bears have a solid young core that got even better with the addition of Mack. Hell, the Saints traded two first round picks for Marcus Davenport.

The Bears thinking was to pay one of the best defenders in the league, who is entering his prime, while Mitch Trubisky, Jordan Howard, Tarik Cohen, Leonard Floyd and Anthony Miller are on their rookie deals. That is called value, my friends.

It appears the Bears also wanted to give Trubisky and the rest of the offense time to grow. They will be able to do that now. This move will allow the Bears’ defense to play great football at times. Mack and Vic Fangio? Oh. My. Goodness.

What made this move possible was the cap space the Bears had available. You never know when superstars like Mack will become available, as a team though, you always have to be ready for it. The Bears, for once, were ready, and they made a bold move Saturday morning.

Say what you want about Pace, but trading for Mack at this time was the right move as I touched on above. If he made this move three years ago…yea, not so much. There is a young core intact. For Chicago, baseball fans, think about when the Cubs made the move in free agency for Jason Heyward.

For Pace, this move was bold and even bigger than the decision to trade up for Trubisky. In the future, the Bears are going to be pretty tight in terms of cap space. They should still have the money to re-sign Eddie Goldman and Adrian Amos if they choose to do so.

Since he entered the league in 2014, Mack has not missed a game. In the last three years, he has recorded 15.0, 11.0 and 10.5 sacks respectively. Along with being one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL, Mack may also be the best run-defending edge rusher in the game according to Pro Football Focus.

Yes, the Bears gave up a lot, but this deal for them still screams value.

The Mack trade doesn’t guarantee a win in Green Bay next Sunday or even a playoff berth. However, it does guarantee that Chicago Bears football is on the rise and will have sustained success — whether that starts this year or next.

Update – Here are the full details of the trade. The Bears were also able to get a second-round pick out of the Raiders.
