Khalil Mack on Playing Week One vs. the Packers: “I Feel Like I’m Ready”

Khalil Mack had his introductory press conference at Halas Hall on Sunday. All signs point to him playing week one vs. the Packers.

The Chicago Bears introduced their new superstar on Sunday afternoon in a press conference at Halas Hall. Khalil Mack was in the building, excited to continue his career with a team and organization that wanted him badly.

“To be wanted, that’s all it takes,” said Mack, who is excited about what the Bears are building.

“Obviously it’s an exciting time to be a Chicago Bear. A lot of young talent.”

Make no mistake about it, the Bears are loaded with talent on both offense and defense. It’s amazing what general manager Ryan Pace has been able to do in just one offseason to build a team that has a chance to contend for a playoff spot in 2018.

The hype around the Mack deal is crazy, to say the least. There are already billboards up around Chicago welcoming the former defensive player of the year. That’s how bad the Bears fanbase wants a winner. This is an organization that hasn’t won a Super Bowl since 1985.

After Vic Fangio made the decision to stay with the Bears as their defensive coordinator, he had no idea he would be rewarded with a potential future Hall of Famer. That’s exactly what happened though. Fangio will find ways to get the most out of Mack, who acknowledged the work his new coach has done with the current Bears’ roster.

“This defense definitely got some dogs. . . Akeim. Floyd. Fuller, tackles like a linebacker. Trevathan… and I’m ready to get out there with them.”

Forget a top 10 defense, the Bears have a chance to have a top 5 defense with the addition of Mack. For an organization that has a history of great defenses, another one may be coming. When asked about the 1985 Bears defense, Mack said it was time to bring some of that to the current team.

Mack, an obvious family man, mentioned his parents several times in his presser. They were in attendance for their son’s big day, which included signing contract that made Mack the highest paid defensive player of All-Time.

“Whoa. Whoa, really? Okay,” is what Mack after the Bears offered him the monster six-year deal that will pay the 27-year-old $141 million. The deal could pay Mack $155 million if everything goes right.

With being the highest paid defensive player in the NFL there is some pressure that comes along with it.

“I’d be lying if I told you there wasn’t. I want to be able to go out and show why Mack said. “I’ve always thought of myself as the best defensive player in the league.”

Will Mack play against the Green Bay Packers week one? Mack said it’s ultimately up to the Bears, but he had this response when he was asked.

“I feel like I’m ready.”

Head coach Matt Nagy said something very similar when asked about Mack playing against the Packers week one.

“Hopefully pretty good.”

Nagy also mentioned that Mack will have his first workout with the Bears tomorrow. Barring any injury issues or other setbacks, Mack should play and play often against the Packers, which will take place a week from tonight.

It’s an exciting time for Chicago Bears football, and Sunday was just the beginning.
