Cubs win home opener 10-0, TCF’s trip to Wrigley

It was an absolutely drop dead GORGEOUS day at the friendly confines on Monday as the TCF boys, Zach, Boomy & Pgoy, took in the Cubs home opener from the left-center bleachers. 70 & sunny, an ever-so-slight breeze, cold beers, and an eventual Cubs victory made for a perfect day.

The Cubs took the field on Monday after a less than impressive 9 game season-opening road trip that saw them open the season 2-7 despite scoring a combined 62 runs in those 9 games.  This game provided the team with an opportunity to hit the reset button on the beginning of the season, put that bad start behind them, get refocused and re-energized with the help of their home crowd of 40,000+ and get to work. And boy, did they do that and then some.

The place was packed and rockin’ from the get-go and we let the boys hear it as they took the field.

Jon Lester was on the bump for the Cubs for the home opener and after making quick work of the Pirates in the 1st & 2nd, he got the offense going in what would be an EXPLOSIVE 2nd inning where we saw the Cubs send 11 men to the dish and score 6 runs with 2 outs on the board before it was all said and done. #PitchersWhoRake

That was the exact start this team needed.  Get the place going early in the game, no dumb mistakes, no playing from behind early, get ahead and keep your foot on the gas.   After the 2-7 start, it would have been very easy for the boo birds to come out and the 40,000 fans groan & over analyze things had the game gone a different way.

Lester’s home debut would be short lived though as he would get pulled in the 3rd inning due to hamstring tightness after his slide into home the inning before.  All the NL DH proponents on Twitter can add this example to their ever growing case for that to become a part of the National League. (another discussion for another day, well, not really because the answer is a pretty obvious yes)

Fast forward a brief bit in the game to the bottom of the 4th inning where Kyle Schwarber stepped to the dish with a man on and, BOMBS AWAY!  Dam can that man hit a baseball.

Side note – that was about a $40 home run for our boy Zach as he was the fortunate one in the rotation to have the cup in the “Cup Game” for that Schwarber Yabo. He graciously bought me a beer and offered to buy pretzels at the train station when we got back. Class move.

The scoring would cease after that home run from Schwarbs but the action and entertainment would continue. Pgoy put enough sunscreen on himself that would have probably covered up the entire section we were sitting in and the boys proceeded to roast him for a good 5 minutes after that even though the sun was doing a good job of roasting all of us about this time. And then of course, the 7th inning stretch!

A tremendous and welcomed relief effort from the bullpen (7 scoreless innings) in innings 3-9 would end with Pedro Strop shutting the door in the 9th as the buckos would ground into a game-ending double play.

The first home game of the 2019 Chicago Cubs season was a much-needed victory and the 40,000+ let the W flags fly and sang the Cubs to the locker room loud & proud.

A very successful opening day trip for the TCF crew and a very successful baseball game for the north siders!!  The next time the Cubs need to break out of a rut, we will do out best to be there.
