White Sox: Dylan Cease Sharp in Knights 3-0 Win Over Indianapolis

Dylan Cease was sharp again for the Knights as he helped lead the team to a shutout victory over the Indianapolis Indians. Sean has more on the game here.

The Charlotte Knights entered today looking to avoid a four-game sweep in Indianapolis. The team was in good shape to achieve that as Dylan Cease took the mound and turned in another great performance in just the second Triple-A start of his young career. It was a pitcher duel in this one, but the Knights were on the winning end as they beat the Indianapolis Indians 3-0 to avoid the sweep.

It was another typical outing for Dylan Cease as he threw a lot of strikes and didn’t give the opposing team much to hit. Cease was sharp from the moment he stepped foot on the mound and through his final inning of work in the bottom of the fifth. Out of the 17 batters he faced, Dylan Cease only allowed three balls to leave the infield this afternoon.

He didn’t pile up the strikeouts this afternoon, even with his fastball consistently sitting around 97 mph. Even though it’s fun to watch Dylan Cease blow his fastball by hitters during his outings, he showed us today that he can be a very effective pitcher without needing strikeouts to do so. It was a rainy day in Indianapolis, but Cease didn’t let that get the best of him as he had great control and faced the minimum in three out of his five innings of work.

Dylan Cease has now put together two great starts to kick off the 2019 season. He has pitched a combined 10.0 IP, only giving up five hits, one walk, and nine strikeouts while maintaining a perfect ERA so far. He easily could’ve pitched longer today as he only threw 60 pitches through five innings, but it’s clear the White Sox are going to be cautious with him as they prepare to have Cease make his MLB debut at some point during the season.

Final Line: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 4 K. 60 pitches, 34 strikes.

It was a mostly quiet day for the Knights offense, but they gave Cease a 1-0 lead before he took the mound thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Matt Skole. When you have a guy like Dylan Cease on the mound, sometimes one run can be enough and that proved to be the case today as the Knights bullpen shutdown the Indians after his departure from the game.

The combination of Carson Fulmer, Caleb Frare, and Evan Marshall kept the shutout alive for the Knights in what was a dominant performance by the entire pitching staff this afternoon. Fulmer, who looks like he’s finding himself again in the early parts of this season, had a very impressive day. He got into some trouble in his first inning of work after allowing a lead-off double and a wild pitch that placed a runner on third with no outs. However, Fulmer settled down by racking up two strikeouts and a groundout to keep the Indians off the scoreboard.

In the past, Carson Fulmer would have allowed this to get to his head and the runner would have scored, but he rose to the occasion this afternoon. He took it upon himself to switch to his college mechanics and it’s paying off for him as he has been one of the most effective bullpen arms for the Knights this season.

The Knights only had five hits this afternoon, but they made them count. They would add some insurance runs in the top of eighth inning as Ryan Goins smacked a two-run home run to give the Knights a 3-0 lead, and that would be the final score in this one.
