Is there ever going to be a time where Ryan Pace doesn’t surprise me? I sure hope not. The Bears moved up from the 87th overall pick (along with the 5th round pick and a 2020 4th round pick) to the 73rd overall pick (also got a 6th round pick) to snatch up David Montgomery Iowa State. And I think he can be an immediate starter for this team.
David went to Mount Healthy High School Cincinnati Ohio. And he was a dual-threat quarterback. Over his four years, he ran for over 6,600 yards and 91 touchdowns. That’s outstanding. Despite this, he was only recruited by four division 1 football teams. He was also only a three-star recruit by 247Sports. When it came time to decide between Iowa State, Ball State, University of Miami Ohio, and the University of Buffalo the decision was easy for him. He chose to be a cyclone.

Although not an immediate starter he made an immediate impact as a true freshman. In his second career start, he ran for 169 yards in a victory over Kansas. He ended his freshman year with 563 rushing yards but he only managed to find the end zone twice. Naturally, after a strong first season, he became a full-time starter as a sophomore. His stats jumped to 1,147 yards and 11 touchdowns. His junior year he ran for 1,216 yards and 13 touchdowns. He finished his career with 2926 yards and 26 touchdowns to the tune 4.7 yards per attempt.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention something. on top of his great running ability, he’s also a more than competent receiver. He finished his college career with 71 receptions on 584 yards although he never got into the endzone.
In the end, I believe David Montgomery is a great pickup for the Bears I see a little bit of cream and him by his feet off the field issues. Plus the fact that he used to be a quarterback in high school makes me think Matt Nagy is going to have a lot of fun utilizing him.
