Analysis White Sox

Eloy Jimenez, Lucas Giolito Help White Sox Beat Mediocre Yankees, Get to .500

Thought I would return the favor tonight after the White Sox just beat the bricks off the Yankees for the second straight night. Don't look now, but baseball is fun again on the south side. The Sox are on the rise and baseball knows it.

In case you missed yesterday’s New York Post headline:

Thought I would return the favor tonight after the White Sox just beat the bricks off the Yankees for the second straight night. Don’t look now, but baseball is fun again on the south side. The Sox are on the rise and baseball knows it.

Let’s do a quick run through of Friday’s game.

Eloy Jimenez, “The Yankees’ Daddy”

Eloy hit two more bombs against the Yankees tonight. He also drove in six runs. I was at Thursday’s game and kept telling my girlfriend that Eloy looked locked in and that he was going to go yard. I was one night off.

The 22-year-old kid has a different look in his eye right now. He’s going to hit another homer before this series is over. Did I mention he was only 22? Crazy right? We got him and Cease in the same deal!

Ace, Lucas Giolito

Giolito didn’t have his best stuff on Friday, but he pitched good enough to win and that’s what a true “Ace” does. Not only should Giolito be the starter for the American League in this summer’s All-Star game, but he should be in the Cy Young conversation.

He’s the first pitcher in baseball to reach 10 wins. He’s also the hottest pitcher in the league right now besides Justin Verlander.

Every fifth day the Sox can count on Giolito to get the job done. That’s huge and at the same time pretty crazy to think about considering they still have Cease, Kopech and a 2020 free agent on deck.

A 2020 rotation could look something like Giolito, Cease, Kopech, Lopez, free agent. There’s a lot of potential there.

.500 Baseball

If you would have told me the White Sox would have been at the .500 mark in June with this roster I would have laughed in your face, but here we are. The White Sox are 34-34 and have become one of the most fun teams to watch in baseball.

Do they have a realistic chance at the playoffs?

No, probably not. There are still some depth issues and Yonder freaking Alonso is still hitting clean-up more times than not. Still, it’s nice to be “in it” for now. At least until the Red Sox get hot anyway, which could never happen. Baseball is a weird sport sometimes.

Other Notes

-White Sox Being Buyers: It’s not happening people! Rick Hahn has already put those rumors to bed. As fun as it is being good, the Sox aren’t ready yet. Trade Colome if you can…maybe Abreu? I don’t know, but being buyers is not going to happen in 2019.

-Can Trade for Players Under Control: Now, the Sox could trade for players that are under contract for a bit. Like a Marcus Stroman. The point is the Sox are not trading for rentals. Making a trade to improve the roster still seems like a big ask at this point though.

-Not signing Machado or Harper…Actually good: All Sox fans, including myself, we’re pretty pissed that Sox missed on Machado and Harper, but it’s actually turned out to be a great thing. You know why? Because the Sox have hella money to spend this offseason on 3-4 players that can help them make some noise in a shitty American League in 2020. J.D. Martinez and Gerrit Cole?????

I’ll try to do shorter recaps/rants/game stories like this one in the future, especially if the White Sox keep this up. We’re back, baby! Don’t think I don’t have my list of all you traitors who were Sox fans that ended up jumping on the Cubs’ bandwagon after they got good either. Y’all are going down.
